Memorialisation
Memorialisation is a time honoured tradition practiced by bereaved and
caring people throughout the centuries.
Buying a memorial is a task you may do only once in your lifetime. Often
it will be a shared memorial. You will be purchasing a product that will
last through the ages to commemorate the life of someone whom you love
dearly and often for someone very special such as yourself.
Many people through personal experience have expressed the importance
of having a memorial as a focus point and a point to visit in the resolution
of family grief. Designing a memorial and contributing to that special
inscription can help to complete the mourning process. Artwork and lettering
for new headstones is a matter of personal choice and we can guide you
in the choice of inscription and to help you get a good idea of the finished
projects, 3D Graphic
replications of projects are available.
Additional inscriptions on existing headstones can be made in the same
style of lettering as the original and this is often an opportunity to
revitalise the headstone and the grave site. Prices vary depending on
the amount of work requested.
Cremation
and Memorials
Granite or bronze plaques are both suitable materials for choice of cremation
memorial. Granite has an advantage over bronze in that it can be designed
to accommodate an additional inscription at a later date and a greater
flexibility in design is possible. Bronze plaques are often chosen because
of their appearance or (in the case of Servicemen's plaques) a need to
conform to the style of neighbouring ones. Bronze plaques cost more than
granite but installation costs are the same for either material. Southland
Crematorium has a variety of sites and care must be taken to ensure that
the correct size is ordered for the location of the memorial.

Burial
and Memorials
Granite is still the most popular choice of material for headstones and
headstones are available in a wide variety of sizes and styles. A range
of stock examples is on display in our showroom which means that work
can usually commence within a few days. Many other shapes, colours and
sizes can be ordered but you should take in account the extra time involved
in delivery. Marble, Bronze and other materials can be used subject to
the ICC's approval. Permits are required for some work. Other cemeteries
have their own specific regulations and it is important to check with
us to ensure that your wishes can be met.

Restoration
- Headstones, Plaques, Gravesites
Restoration of an old grave or headstone is a task that should only
be handled by a reputable Monumental Mason. Cracked concrete and its collapse
is not only unsightly but an indication that the structure of the grave
has become unstable and subsequently unsafe. Many older headstones are
much higher than is commonly erected nowadays and because they are extremely
heavy they should not be disturbed without the correct people and equipment
being present. They are usually made of marble or granite and once they
begin to lean, it is only a matter of time before they eventually fall.
We suggest that you contact us to discuss your options on restoration
of these sites.
The more recent headstones and gravesites don't present the same hazards
and restoration is usually much simpler. Often just a cleaning and relettering
will revitalise such a site.

*
Cleaning of sculpture, gravestones, and monuments
