Scallop Shell The scallop shell is the emblem of Saint James The Greater and pilgrims retracing his journey often carried scallop shells as a symbol. Although the scallop shell has an alternative symbolism of fertility, an even earlier translation of its meaning is as representing the setting sun - death. It also is a representation of baptism and scallop shaped dishes are still used today. |
